Annual Background Check Requirement
As part of Little League International’s Child Protection Program, all volunteers are required to complete a background check every year. This includes a nationwide criminal search, a review of the National Sex Offender Registry, the U.S. Center for SafeSport Disciplinary Database, and the Little League Ineligible List. San Juan Capistrano Little League (SJCLL) uses J.D. Palatine (JDP), Little League’s preferred provider, to conduct these checks. Background checks are completed annually based on Little League’s fiscal year, running from October 1 through September 30.
Abuse Awareness Training Requirement
The safety and well-being of every child in Little League® is our top priority, and it’s up to all of us to help create a safe, positive, and fun experience each season. To support this, all volunteers are required to complete Abuse Awareness training every year. Little League International has launched a new Abuse Awareness Training Course to make this process simple and accessible for everyone.
Concussion Requirement Training
California law (CA HSC 124235) and Little League Western Region require all Managers, Coaches, and Umpires to complete concussion training every year and provide a copy of their completion certificate. The course is free, but you’ll need to create an account with CDC TRAIN to access it. Once finished, your certificate will be saved in your account so you can reprint it at any time. If you can’t log back in later, you’ll need to set up a new account and retake the course.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Training Requirement
California law (HSC 124235) requires all Managers, Coaches, and Umpires to complete sudden cardiac arrest training every year and provide a copy of their completion certificate. The course is free, but you’ll need to register in order to take the training and receive your certificate.
Live Scan Fingerprint Check: Live Scan Fingerprint Check Requirement
California law (Assembly Bill No. 506, effective January 1, 2022) requires a fingerprint-based background check for anyone 18 or older who has direct contact with players for more than 16 hours a month or 32 hours a year. Given the length of our season, this applies to all Managers and Assistant Coaches, returning volunteer Umpires who participate each season, Team Admins, and any adults who regularly help at practices. Live Scan fingerprinting is conducted by the California Department of Justice, and more information is available at
https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints.
- Cost and Scheduling: SJCLL will cover the cost of Live Scan and will host at least one fingerprinting event each season. If you cannot attend the SJCLL-hosted event, you may complete the process at an authorized location and submit your receipt for reimbursement.
